How long do steel braided PTFE hoses last | BESTEFLON

Introduction to the service life of PTFE hoses:

As we all know, due to the high-performance characteristics of PTFE hoses, it's now used in various industries. Although the PTFE hose has a long service life, it will shorten the service life if it is used improperly. Besides, it is also very important to choose the correct PTFE grade and application brand, because the pipes with good raw materials and qualified manufacturing processes will have a longer service life. Each PTFE pipe manufacturer considers specific applications when designing PTFE grades

PTFE hoses introduction

PTFE is one of the most stable polymer materials known. It is resistant to acid, alkali, solvents, high temperature and ultraviolet rays. It is often called the "Plastic King". His color is usually white waxy, translucent, and has the following excellent characteristics:

1. High temperature resistance: working temperature can reach 260℃.

2. Low temperature resistance: good mechanical toughness; even if the temperature drops to -65°C, it can maintain 5% elongation.

3. Corrosion resistance: It is inert to most chemicals and solvents, and can withstand strong acids and alkalis, water and various organic solvents.

4. Weather resistance: It has the best aging life among plastics.

5. High lubricity: it is the lowest friction coefficient among solid materials.

6. No adhesion: This is the smallest surface tension among solid materials and does not adhere to any substance.

7. Non-toxic: It is physiologically inert and will not cause adverse reactions due to long-term implantation of artificial blood vessels and organs into the human body

Factors affecting of long service life

In addition to the quality of PTFE's own raw materials or improved conditions, the service life of PTFE is related to the following external environment:

1. Operating pressure

performance product hoses work continuously under the specified maximum working pressure. Generally speaking, the working pressure is a quarter of the minimum rupture pressure of the hose. Excessive pressure can cause the tube to rupture

2. Pressure surge

Almost all hydraulic systems produce pressure fluctuations that may exceed the safety valve setting. Exposing the hose to surge pressures that exceed the maximum operating pressure will shorten the life of the hose and must be considered. Surge (fast transient pressure rise) will not be displayed on many ordinary pressure gauges, but it can be measured with electronic measuring equipment. In a system with severe surges, choose a hose with a higher maximum operating pressure

3. Burst pressure

These are only test values and apply to hose assemblies that have not been used and have been assembled for less than 30 days

4. High pressure

High-pressure gas systems, especially high-pressure gas systems exceeding 250 psi, are very dangerous and should be fully protected from external shocks and mechanical or chemical damage. They should also be properly protected to prevent whipping in the event of a malfunction

5. Operating temperature

PTFE hose has a certain temperature limit, and its working temperature range is between -65° and 260°. However, long-term use of a temperature above 260 degrees will cause its deformation, which will have a great impact on the use of the product; the specified working temperature refers to the highest temperature of the fluid or gas being transported. Therefore, the maximum temperature of each hose does not apply to all fluids or gases. Continuous use at maximum temperature and maximum pressure should always be avoided. Continuous use at the highest rated temperature or close to the highest rated temperature will cause deterioration of the physical properties of the tubes and caps of most hoses. This deterioration will reduce the service life of the hose

6. Bending radius

The recommended minimum bending radius is based on the maximum working pressure, the hose cannot be bent. When the bending radius decreases below the recommended minimum value, the safe operating pressure decreases. Bending the hose to less than the specified minimum bend radius will reduce the service life of the hose

7. Vacuum operation

The maximum negative pressure display hose-16 and larger are only applicable to hoses that are not damaged or kinked externally. If -16 and larger hoses require greater negative pressure, it is recommended to use internal support coils

8. Hose assembly inspection

The hose assembly in use should be checked frequently for leaks, kinks, corrosion, wear, or any other signs of wear or damage. Worn or damaged hose assemblies should be removed from the maintenance system and replaced immediately

In general, PTFE hoses are widely used in a variety of harsh environments such as high temperature, high pressure, and corrosion resistance. But as long as it is used under normal conditions, its service life will hardly be bad. All in the process of using, please be sure to cherish your tube, in order to ensure that it can serve you longer.
